Freehold shack just over an hour from Adelaide, a stone’s throw from the Murray River.
The acre block slopes down towards a lagoon, which is fringed with lignum and red gums and black box trees. The block has several established black box and red gum trees on it.
In the evening the cliffs glow orange in the sunset – it is a spectacular view and so tranquil to sit at the back with an evening drink and watch the birds fly by.
Purchased in 2006, the shack is an unfinished project. Built in 1954 by an engineer, it survived the 1956 floods despite being almost completely submerged. Improvements after purchase include:
- a 1kWh solar system (connected to the grid)
- 3 additional rainwater tanks (4 in total – 2 are connected to the main shack)
- re-roofed the garage and front porch
- laid a concrete slab in the undercover work area adjacent to the garage
There is a separate toolshed and outside composting toilet. The garage was to be converted into a sleepout with deck but was not finished.
Inside the main shack has no separate rooms – instead it’s a big kitchen / living / dining area with an electric stove and oven and wood-fired combustion heating. The sunroom, inside bathroom and toilet all need work.
The area is a beautiful part of the Murray River, 30km from Mannum and 30km from Swan Reach, close to lagoons, wetlands and of course the mighty Murray.
