Meridan Plains is located partly within the Caloundra urban centre 8 kilometres west-northwest of Caloundra. Meridan Plains is named after an early property in the area, which was named from Aboriginal words meaning “place of kangaroos or dingoes”.
Profile
Meridan Plains, a rural/residential suburb, is generally six km north-west of Caloundra. It was named after the Meradan Plains pastoral run, south of the Mooloolah River, taken up by Edmund William and Richard Westerway c1870. The suburb was named in 1988. Meridan Plains is the site of Corbould Park, the home of the Sunshine Coast Turf Club. It holds weekly Sunday race meetings and special events on Melbourne Cup day and during its July carnival. The district’s eastern boundary lies along the route of a proposed railway line from Beerwah to Maroochydore. Nearby are a substantial housing estate, the Pacific Lutheran College (2001) and the Meridan State college (2006). Meridan Plains sit on a large body of sand suited to building applications. In 2005 Caloundra City council undertook planning for an extraction industry. The council has also begun planning for residential development west of the proposed railway between the State college and the Lutheran college, and a new multi-purpose sport and recreational facility.
