“Avondale”

This beautiful Victorian terrace was built in 1889 by Michael McMahon for his new bride Mary McCrossin. She became estranged from her family as a result of the marriage and “Avondale” was a gift meant to ease the pain. It is reputed to have cost 500 pounds and even features imported “Dancing Ladies” iron lacework to the front balcony.

The couple lived in the house until 1904 only leaving for Sydney because he was elected State Member for the Tablelands. During his time in Uralla he also served as Mayor for many years.

Today, “Avondale” remains one of Uralla’s most unique and identifiable properties. The terrace style architecture is at once imposing and playful. Full brick with a quality cedar staircase, it resonates with old world charm. There have been a number of upgrades to the property over the years including a new kitchen and bathroom in the mid 90′s. Most recently the roof has been rejuvinated and the front verandah completely restored.

The home comprises a kitchen, bathroom, laundry, 2 beautiful formal rooms and 3 upstairs bedrooms. Fireplaces are a feature with 1 converted to a gas log fire, another to a closed wood fire and there are 2 other working fireplaces as well. The home also has a reverse cycle airconditioning unit.

The grounds are extensive and include a garage with remote control door and frontage to back to Bligh Avenue. There is obvious sub-division potential (STCA).

It is rare that a property comes onto the market that combines genuine historical interest with all the grace and charm of yesteryear, but still offering modern amenity.

Yes indeed, love does heal all.
