Step back into a time when you literally had the time to listen to the bird-life while having a cup of tea! This unique and thoughtful home was inspired by Walter Burley Griffin who designed Canberra, Castlecrag and Griffith. Walter Burley Griffin believed that one should honour the Australian bush and live with empathy in a pristine environment.
The owners were inspired to build a house that does not intrude on the natural environment. As an example they built around special trees rather than cut them down! They have also mass planted native trees and bushes to attract the local bird-life.
The 8 x 5 metre (approx) kitchen (with gas cooking) overlooks an internal glass atrium. Jarrah bench tops complete the natural feel of this warm and inviting space. The pantry has to be seen to be believed; It also doubles as a cellar (perfect temperature) and brewing room. Organic produce is stored in this room which is lit by a rooftop skylight. The internal walls are concrete/mud brick and keep the house at an even temperature all year round.
A large combustion wood burning fire heats the area beautifully and definitely adds a charming ambience to the living and dining rooms.
As this house is orientated directly to the North, it is a sunny haven – drenched in the rays of the sun nearly all day! Slate floors also absorb the sun’s heat and keep it cosy even on the coldest of days. Conversely the house stays incredibly cool even on the hottest days of summer!
There are lemon, fig, macadamia and hundreds of native orchids! The owners refer to it as “orchid heaven” as the trees thrive with the temperatures and protection from the wind.
The “garden on the roof” is definitely the WOW factor, offering all types of natives and a cobbled walkway leading to spectacular views overlooking this expansive property. The bird-life is prolific and again, a nature lovers dream!
There is a real sense of peace, calm and tranquility with the only sounds coming from the wild life, waterfalls and springs!
If you are thinking of stepping off the treadmill of busy, city living and want to live in a truly unique and thoughtful space, please take the time to inspect this magical and inspirational home.
