Bilinga – Tugun is bounded by the Coral Sea in the north, the suburb of Coolangatta in the east, the New South Wales border in the south, and the Pacific Motorway, Stewart Road, Blamey Drive and Flat Rock Creek in the west. Bilinga is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning “bat” or “parrot”.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1890s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Population was minimal until the early 1900s. Growth took place during the 1910s and 1920s, spurred by improved access and land auctions. Rapid growth occurred from the 1960s to the 1980s. Gradual growth continued between 1991 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 2006 and 2011
Major features of the area include Gold Coast (Coolangatta) Airport, Southern Cross University (Gold Coast Campus), Bilinga Beach, North Kirra Beach, Tugun Beach, Airport Central Shopping Centre, John Flynn Private Hospital, Gold Coast Oceanway Walk, Betty Diamond Sports Complex, Atkin Park, Don Paxton Park, Honeymoon Tree Park and Tugun Hill Conservation Area.
