The Story
Here’s your opportunity to own a piece of South Australian History.
Hurtwood was apparently one of the first houses to be built in Tungkillo in the 1860′s. Local historians believe that it was constructed by 2 brothers by the name of Spry ,one of them the local baker.
Tungkillo was originally the name of a mine located south of Palmer. The town as it is today was originally settled by Samuel Patten in 1861. It was called South Petherton after a town he lived in in Somerset England (a little different landscape I would think). They changed the name to Tungkillo in 1906 which is from the aboriginal word meaning “Ghost Moth Grubs”.
That’s the end of the history lesson.
Today, the house sits comfortably nestled into its 3270m2 block surrounded by a pretty cottage garden.
The remainder of the land is dotted with various native trees and open spaces.
The character laden homestead is an absolute delight. The wide verandahs provide ample shade and perfect places to sit and enjoy the surroundings.
As with most country homes you enter into the kitchen. Its wide bench spaces are perfect for entertaining and the neutral tones create a calming atmosphere. The meals area is located in the corner with the most amazing stained glass feature windows. The artist who designed and made the windows that feature throughout the house is the Internationally renowned, Ian Mowbray.
History and famous Artist…the list goes on. A large bedroom is located off the kitchen with a feature fireplace (unused) and pretty garden views. The living and dining room is comfortably proportioned with French doors providing access to the verandah and gardens. Baltic pine ceilings and slate floors combine to create a country house style.
Stained glass also features in this room with bedrooms 1 and 2 adjoining this large space. Bedroom 1 leads through to a retreat. This has a multitude of uses, a dressing room perhaps, or a sewing room or reading room and library…your choice.
The bathroom and laundry are not fashionably tiled but they are still functioning well. You may choose to upgrade these areas.
Part of the roof has been replaced, the remainder is waterproof but would benefit from a fresh coat of paint. A solar hot water service heats the water. A double garage takes care of storage and car accommodation.
Hurtwood House offers a wealth of character in this sleepy little town just an hour’s drive from the CBD through the stunning Onkapringa Valley countryside. This home would make a perfect weekender or a first home for the buyer seeking a more rural lifestyle.
