VENDOR POINTS OF INTEREST
Mum and Dad built the house in 1952 using a War Service loan. Dad was an airman in World War 2 flying rescue missions into Burma from India. At that stage they had 2 small children.
Opposite was a flower nursery which covered 5 or 6 blocks. Professor Fitzherbert, a lecturer in classic languages at Adelaide University, lived on a large property which extended from the corner of Hallett Ave and what is now Glynburn Rd and covered around 4 blocks. Because it is a “no through road” there was no passing traffic and it was always good for a game of cricket or a kick of a football.
Clarrie Grimmett, the well-known Australian Test cricketer, lived 100 metres away, almost directly opposite, on Glynburn Rd.
Mum and Dad subsequently had another 2 children and consequently added a third bedroom and the back verandah. So they brought up 4 children at Glen Ave.
In the early days the only shops nearby were a delicatessen and a butchers on Glynburn Rd.
The shopping centre and other shops on Glynburn Rd came along subsequently. There is a laneway which runs alongside their longstanding next door neighbour of 60 years and allows easy access to the shops on Glynburn Rd and one of the two available bus services to the city. The other bus service is at the end of Arthur street, a short distance away.
It takes about 20 minutes to get to the city by bus.
It was Mum and Dad’s only house and they were both very house proud.
They lived there until Mum died in 2014 and Dad in 2017.
