Velo Vineyard, Winery, Cellar Door and Cafe-Restaurant are a significant part of the Tourist Landscape of the Tamar Wine and Tourism Route. The vineyard has particular significance with the first vines planted in 1966 by Tasmanian wine industry icon Graham Wiltshire with plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, making the Cabernet vines the oldest in Tasmania, a fact not lost on people with wine knowledge who understand the importance and influence of vine age on grape quality.

Under the 15 year stewardship of the current owners since purchasing in 2001 and re branding as Velo, the wines have become a household name to people who seek out fine quality Tasmanian Wines. It is ideally located central not only to the Tamar Wine Route but also to passing traffic in the high profile location it features.

With 2.46 Hectares (6.07 acres) of the 4.17 Hectare (10.29 acre) property planted to vines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz an ideal cross section of wines are produced for market through cellar door, cafe and restaurant as well as distribution networks. Only Chardonnay grapes need be outsourced, although to meet demand other varieties in the range are periodically supplemented from local growers as required. Velo Wines have won numerous awards and accolades across their range. The vineyard yields approximately 15 tonnes per year allowing for seasonal variations. Red wines are made on site, White wines are made by contract winemaker, to date by Winemaking Tasmania.

Velo boasts modern catering facilities, the logical extension to the business, given its location Velo facilities were extended and The Barrel Room – Cafe and Restaurant was opened in late 2012 with seating for approximately 110 pax (70 indoor and 40 Alfresco depending on seating plan). The Barrel Room Cafe and Restaurant recently having been leased for a 10 year period until July 2026, and providing a secure income stream supporting the core business of wine production and sales.

Velo epitomises the reason that attracted pioneers of the wine industry to Tasmania and now sees many of the more astute Mainland wine companies adding Tasmanian vineyards and brands to their portfolios. The Tamar has a cool climate moderated further by the influence of the Tamar River providing long slow ripening conditions that suit multiple grape varieties and build distinctive varietal characters. It is little wonder that for the level of production Tasmanian wines attract such a high profile and recognition on the domestic and indeed international stages.

Velo wines are situated only a couple of minutes from the Legana shopping precinct, approximately 15 minutes to Launceston CBD, and 25 minutes to the Launceston airport, one hour to Devonport and the Ferry terminal for the Spirit of Tasmania, or Devonport airport, and approximately two and a half hours drive to Hobart, and could not be a more central and accessible site to locate.

While the property does not host a residence, it has been granted a permit to establish a residence for someone requiring to live on site, and development (STCA) subject to council approval.

The property is offered with Vineyard and Cellar door (bare) as priced above, or with the option of (W.I.W.O.) Walk In Walk Out with Plant and Equipment.
