History and character aren’t words often used to described properties in Coffs Harbour; there simply aren’t many homes from our city’s early days that have survived the march of progress. The Cottage is the exception.
The circa 1902 building housed the Bank of New South Wales and a chemist in the early 1900s. It was originally located on Monee Street, before being moved to its current location in McLean Street at some point between 1909 and 1925.
Today The Cottage has been transformed into a three bedroom home with all the modern conveniences.
A period renovation has kept the feeling of yesteryear alive, but as with any character home, the possibilities for a change of dcor are as close as a bucket of paint and a little DIY.
A stained glass front door leads to the open plan lounge and dining area on the lower level of the home. Exposed rafters, timber balustrades and mantle are in keeping with the Edwardian era. A sitting room/study and third bedroom lead from the living area.
The bathroom has been transformed in grand style. Brass fittings and a claw foot bath are complimented by black and white tiles and a stained glass window.
Etched glass French doors lead to the kitchen which has also been given a 21st century facelift. An informal dining area and laundry adjoins the kitchen.
A large veranda at the rear of the house overlooks the private backyard and gazebo and is an ideal spot to enjoy a cup of tea. Green thumbs could transform this area into a traditional country garden, or retain the grass for the kids to run wild on.
At the rear of the block is a garage with workshop area, accessed by a side gate.
The second floor of the cottage contains two more bedrooms and a powder room. Both bedrooms are loft-style with built in wardrobes. The Master overlooks the garden and has air conditioning.
With rear lane access, 2C zoning and a short walk to the CBD, The Cottage offers a range of possibilities
