Coffs Harbour – Regional Overview – April 2012

Coffs Harbour sits in a unique position where the Great Dividing Range descends from the inland plateau to meet the Australian East Coast. Offshore are the Solitary Islands where the warm tropical currents meet the temperate waters from the south. In-between the forested hills and sparkling blue waters lies the sub-tropical city of Coffs Harbour, which is a mid north coast NSW city situated 552 kilometres north of Sydney and 431 kilometres south of Brisbane. It is well serviced by road, rail and sea and has a jet airport.

The Coffs Harbour Local Government Area (LGA) has a population of approximately 70,000 with an annual growth rate of 1.9% per annum. The population is concentrated to the urban areas with 59.4% of residents living in Coffs Harbour, Toormina, Sawtell and Boambee East (Source: ABS 24th April 2009), with expansion proposed in the Northern Beaches area and Bonville.

It has the largest industrial infrastructure between Newcastle and the Gold Coast and a strong primary industry based on banana production, cattle, timber and fishing. Tourism and in recent times, sport-based tourism, is a major growth industry for the area. The Formula One World Rally Event is held each year in Coffs Harbour and there is current discussion regarding hosting the Surf Life Saving Annual Event on the main beach. The city has a good variety of accommodation ranging from budget facilities to up market resort-style properties, coupled with some world class sporting facilities.

As a regional centre the facilities that are available include theatre, regional library, music conservatorium, regional gallery, movie theatres, restaurants, car dealerships, industrial complexes, fishing club, yacht club, safe harbour, university, TAFE, regional airport with daily flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Coffs Harbour Base Hospital, Baringa Private Hospital, regional shopping complexes and sporting facilities such as BCU Stadium. Infrastructure and Facilities

Airport

The jet airport is one of the largest and busiest regional airports in NSW with flights from Coffs Harbour to Sydney being 1 hour flight time. Qantas has 40 return flights to Sydney each week, Sunshine Express has 25 flights to Brisbane weekly and Virgin Blue has 13 return flights to Sydney each week and a weekly direct service to Melbourne.

Coffs Harbour Airport has approval for a $ 5.0 million upgrade and Council are in discussion with various airlines regarding a proposal to fly direct services to Karatha in Western Australia to provide a ‘fly in fly out’ base in Coffs Harbour for mining industry workers which will include a stopover in Tamworth to accommodate the Gunnedah Basin coal and gas projects. Council has advised they reached 85% of agreement at April 2012.

Hospitals/Specialists

The $80 million Coffs Harbour Health Campus is a comprehensive regional centre for Health Services with further expansion underway. Extensive specialists, GP and alternate therapy practitioners are located in the region. The newly completed Specialist Medical Centre is located beside the hospital and is a very welcome addition to the region. Such a facility in Coffs Harbour is a major draw card to retirees knowing specialist medical services are available. (http://specialistmedicalcentre.com.au/)

The 80 bed Baringa Private Hospital offers medical, surgical, obstetric and rehabilitation services, recently extending with 4 new operating theatres http://www.baringaprivate.com.au/

Health facilities are a key factor when retirees are considering relocating especially when it comes to the travel distance to a facility and what specialists are available. Summary

The infrastructure is in place to accommodate future expansion of the city and population increases to the region. Medical specialist’s numbers are increasing and we now have a radiation therapy unit planned. DA approval has been granted for the construction of a Myer Store to compliment the Park Beach Plaza shopping centre which demonstrates a level of confidence in the area. Gowings Shopping Centre upgrades are another sign of confidence.

An upgrade of the Coffs Harbour Jetty and harbour precinct is expected to move forward soon providing additional restaurants, shopping and boardwalk facilities. NBN will provide multiple opportunities for business and education sectors. Airport could soon become the Eastern Seaboard fly in – fly out centre for the NSW and WA mining workers.
