Brief Historical Overview:
Nana Glen is located within 25mins drive of Coffs Harbour. (Nana being the local Aboriginal word meaning two tailed and referring to both the Two Tailed Lizard and the fork at Nana Creek which resembles the Two Tailed Lizard.)
The Village itself is of historical interest. The mother lode of gold was discovered in the Orara River area by the Sharpe brothers in 1881 who then opened the Lady Matilda mine. Other reefs were soon discovered and mines opened. After gold discoveries and the arrival of the timber getters, local wealth created demand for more leases and the sale of land.
Former gold miners and other new arrivals soon became agricultural land holders, with Dairy Farms on the river flats being the most successful.
The first European settler was Edward Sharpe who named his property Nana Glen in 1892. The first Post Office was located at Sharpe’s property, which led to the Village itself being called Nana Glen.
The number of roads that converge on Nana Glen even today (Orara Way, East Bank Rd, Bucca Rd, Central Bucca Rd) all attest to the early importance and historical significance of Nana Glen.
Today Nana Glen is a quiet and picturesque village surrounded by quiet farming districts.
