Local Suburb Information – Culburra Beach
Culburra Beach, commonly referred to as Culburra, is in the Shoalhaven region of NSW, 18km east-southeast of Nowra. At the 2006 census the town had a population of almost 3000 and is the regional centre for the coastal villages of Currarong, Callala Beach, Callala Bay and Orient Point.
Culburra is a small seaside town and a popular holiday, fishing and surfing location. Local industries include oysters, shrimp, and prawns. It has two surf beaches – Culburra and Warrain. The town is flanked by Crookhaven River to the north and west, and Lake Wollumboola to the south.
The towns shops and businesses provide a range of services and places to eat for residents and visitors.
Culburra also boasts the two closest surf beaches to Nowra and is home to the Culburra Beach and Nowra Surf Club, whose clubhouse is at the northern end of Warrain Beach. Beaches are patrolled during summer holidays. Being located on either side of Penguin Head and facing different directions, the beaches provide a variety of surf conditions for board riders, swimmers, body surfers and families with young children.
Tennis and squash courts and the bowling club provide an alternative to the beaches. Live bands perform at the club most weekends.
Culburra has a public primary school, with high schools in nearby Nowra and Vincentia. The town is served by Nowra Community Hospital, Shoalhaven Hospital and Nowra Private Hospital.
