History of Newstead
The Newstead residence was originally built in 1890 for Mr George de Vial Pilcher and was constructed by a local builder, Mr James Douglas.

The grounds were laid out into a beautiful English type garden which even now reflects an atmosphere of old world charm that has never ceased to attract the many visitors who pay tribute to its beauty. Shortly after the completion of the building a small Indian Cedar Tree was planted by the then owner in the centre of the front circular carriage way. This tree has since grown into the magnificent specimen, dominating the front entrance the grounds.

The name Newstead is still visible in the stained glass, forming the fanlight above the entrance door.

The property changed ownership many times throughout the years and was auctioned on behalf of Mr A.N Kerr of Well wood Orange on the 4th of December 1954. The Auction attracted the attention of Mr Lou Bernard a keen bowler. Mr Bernard purchased the property for 10,000 and with the assistance of a close friend, Mr Ben Dein, formed what was then a second bowling club in Orange, with the bowling greens being constructed soon after.

During 1973 extensive structural additions were made to the northern section of the building to provide a larger assembly room and to improve the facilities and amenities. Newsteads link to the Douglas family of Orange was maintained when in October 1973 the new extensions were officially opened and dedicated to James Stuart Douglas, son of the original builder.

Because its historical and architectural qualities, Newstead has now been included in the National Trusts recorded list.

The property is being offered for sale by Tender. The closing date and conditions will require tenders to be submitted on the official tender document available from the selling agents to be deposited at the selling agent registered office at 178 Lords Place, Orange on or before 5pm, Friday, 4th August 2014
