The Story of “San Pedro”:

Nearly three decades ago Sandy and Peter Short found their way to a hidden stretch of the Hawkesbury River near Sackville North. We were looking for acreage on a river and not far from Sydney Peter recalls. This property jumped out at us because of the river frontage and the magnificent poplar tree plantation. It had the name Morundah I enquired at the Mitchell Library and was told that this is an Aboriginal name. It translates to I got stuck in the mud I suppose this is why part of the road is called Mud Island Road Peter speculates.

Taking part of Sandy’s name (San’) and the Spanish for Peter (Pedro’) created the new name the Shorts gave their stunning riverside retreat San Pedro. This 44 acre property only ninety minutes from the City reveals a slice of Hawkesbury history like no other.

This part of Sydney is truly majestic and anyone who has read The Secret River’ (By Kate Grenville) cannot help but be transported back in time as they stand on our beach, staring at the magnificent rock face and heavenly Hawkesbury Peter says It can be very serene sitting by the river at dusk or early morning

It is said that we have the best beach on the river

In 2003 Sandy suggested that the cattle were still running as fast as they always did but perhaps I was not- hence the beginning of the San Pedro Vineyard.
We selected Chambourcin as the grape to produce wine and planted about 640 vines. By 2005 we’d produced our first vintage. Just for fun I entered it in the Hawkesbury Show in 2006, we won a gold medal.

The interior decoration was the brainchild of Sandy Peter reveals. I always describe her as having an inner eye she knows exactly what the end result will look like and it is always great. Sandy wanted to create a family living area, which is why the kitchen, dining and entertainment areas are all in one room.
It is a place where family and friends love to visit and spent time, inspiring culinary delights, appreciation of fine wines, and amazing sleight-of-hand at card games!

There are always things to do and work to be done, but it does not impose on you when you do these things there is something special about looking after the land and the produce that comes from it. It is very rewarding and satisfying to walk down the rows of vines and see them grow from sticks after pruning, to lush growth and flowering buds and then to full and rich flavoured grapes.

You rebuild your reserves at this place … it is a place of solace.
