More than 2000 people are resident on Macleay, enjoying several beaches for swimming and fishing, as well as a bowls club, golf course and boat club. The arts are also catered for with a delightful Arts Complex, consisting of studio, gallery and pottery shed. Macleay is also host to a number of service organisations such as Rotary and Lions as well as an enthusiastic Progress Association.

A primary school, ambulance station and Volunteer Fire Brigade are based on the island. There are also several shopping centres which cater for the community
