Located in the Moreton Bay marine park, 40 km from Brisbane and 30km from the Gold Coast. The Island features a range of sandy beaches and mangroves with fish, crabs, prawns etc in abundance in the surrounding waters.
Protected wildlife also abound such as dolphins, dugongs, turtles and all varieties of bird life.
Russell Island (aboriginal name ‘Canaipa’) is the largest of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and has the greatest range of facilities. Such as: Doctors, Chemist, Ambulance, Heli-pad, Rural Fire Brigade, Yacht Club, RSL Club, Bowling Club, Solicitors, video store, bakery, cafe, fish and chip shop, liquor shop, hairdressers, hardware stores, garage, nursery, mini supermarket, Primary School, Community Centre and Post Office.
The island has town water, electricity and telephones (broadband is also available). The sewer is planned to commence construction in 2008. Russell Island also is the proposed site for the Bay Islands High School, olympic swimming pool and Police Station. There is currently no bridge connecting Russell to the mainland but it is serviced by a fast passenger ferry departing from the south end of Banana St, Redland Bay running about every 30 minutes.
