This house is built to suit mixed generations of family and friends sharing informal weekends.

Canaipa Point Drive House is located on the eastern side of Russell Island in Moreton Bay. The contrast between the existing housing types and this new outcome to island living illustrates the importance of developing and understating an informed response to the elements on the bay.

Entry is broken down through a series of architectural and landscape conditions. The courtyard is the entry to the house and connects all elements of the site together. Once through this initial journey and understanding, one enters a private and secure world. Home a central, open north facing courtyard of concrete bathed in sunlight. The house wraps around three sides of the courtyard, with the fourth wall being an operable stainless steel mesh sliding door system. This allows for outdoor living with mosquito protection. Living spaces sit on either side of the courtyard one a less formal “play room” and the other with the kitchen and “grown-up” lounge.

A major challenge in constructing the project was the importation of building materials from the main land. In this building there was a whole series of prefabricated elements that allowed good management and control from Brisbane. This building pieces were seen as a ‘super structure’ later to be filled, on site, with refined timber and joinery work.

Above the living areas are the sleeping areas the children’s above the playroom, and the parents’ suspended over the kitchen and lounge, lie in bed at night and watch the stars or the rain coming down thru the glassed windows on your ceiling. A narrow bridge connects the two bedroom wings and overlooks the courtyard and garden. Bathrooms and the laundry are concealed in cupboards running along the side of the bridge.Walls of glass slide away completely at the edges of the living spaces, creating a fluid connection between the courtyard and roofed areas.Viewings upon appointment.
