Multimillion-dollar marina planned for Burnett Heads
NEW MARINA: Port of Bundaberg manager Jason Pascoe, TPK Investments owner Tony Koufos and Cr Danny Rowleson look over the proposal plans of a $12 million marina development project earmarked for Burnett Heads. Max Fleet
UPDATED: BURNETT Heads could become a “jewel in the crown” of the region following a $12 million proposal for a super marina in the growing area, said a Bundaberg councillor.
Sydney developer Tony Koufos officially lodged his plans for the 273-berth marina with Bundaberg Regional Council yesterday, following eight-and-a-half years of preparation work and a series of pre-lodgement discussions.
Mr Koufos, of TPK Investments, said after all the work that had been done, he hoped the marina would be approved within six months and planned to start building straight after.
Mr Koufos said the multimillion-dollar development would include 273 berths capable of accommodating super yachts, as well as the on-land construction of a cafe/kiosk and a restaurant.
“It will be a world-class facility and a base for charter vessels to access the region,” he said.
Division 6 councillor Danny Rowleson said while council staff were yet to make a decision on the proposal, preliminary meetings with the developer had been positive.
Cr Rowleson said a project of this nature could be the catalyst for further development in the region.
“I don’t think the people of Burnett Heads ever thought they would get something like this,” he said.
“This is a great opportunity for the region and a chance for Burnett Heads to become a jewel in the crown.”
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said Mr Koufos had overcome many setbacks to get to this stage and he expressed his support for the economic benefit it could generate for the region.
“I’m excited about the economic drivers that this development will generate for the Burnett Coast and the wider Coral Coast,” he said.
“It goes to show we believe we have made the necessary changes to allow these developments to go ahead.
“We’re open for business. Once they start (being approved), this will have a domino effect.”
Bundaberg Port Manager Jason Pascoe said the proposal had the backing of the Port of Bundaberg.
“It fits with the land use plan and strategic development for the port,” Mr Pascoe said.
