“Stirling” is one of the grand old homes of Maryborough and despite substantial renovational work carried out the charm of the original design remains. This imposing residence sits on a fully fenced 1687m2 magnificently landscaped allotment.

Gone is the shingle roof and the dwelling is now of two and three level configuration, but the original timbers including cedar and beech are still in great order as is the ornate timber staircase that dominates the entry foyer.

In the early 1850s when Surveyor Lasbatt’s survey revealed the present site of Maryborough superior to the old township of Baddow, land speculators purchased land in the new area including North Street, near the Mary River, as soon as the first land sales were held.

One such buyer was James Hammell who was the first owner of part of the present site of “Stirling”.

In 1857 the land was transferred to Geo Robinson of Travellers Rest Hotel at Musket Flat, the licence of which he held until 1872. Geo Robinson established 14 North Street as his town residence. After his death in 1872, the property was held in trust for his young family by J & W Powell of South Doongul Station. Geo Stupart who established the largest emporium in Maryborough was the next owner of this property. Following the death of his first wife he married Matilda. It was during the ownership of Geo Stupart that the two-storey front was added to the dwelling which he named “Stirling” in honour of his birthplace in Scotland. Ownership passed from him to a Great Nephew, Tom Petrie, and then to Mr Rodwell, Mill Superintendent of Wilson Hart and Co and was then purchased by Mr W.W.G Mackay in 1945. In 1964 Mr Mackay’s daughter, Catherine, became the owner of “Stirling” who in turn sold it to the current owners in 1999.

The current custodians of this magnificent residence have since carried out extensive renovations to bring “Stirling” back to its previous glory. In 2001 it won the Mayors Award in the annual Heritage Awards.

Some of the recent improvements to Stirling include a gourmet kitchen that has to be seen to be believed, solar panels feeding back to the grid, heated inground swimming pool and central air-conditioning to the living areas.

The home boasts 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, music room, lounge and dining area with fireplace, rumpus room, separate bathroom, 3 car accommodation, office and alarm system.
