Laura Roadhouse is a very busy enterprise at the gateway to the peninsula.
Residents of Weipa use the roadhouse as a staging point on their road trip to Cairns. Road Tek (a division of Main Roads) use the roadhouse as a base for accommodation, meals and fuel for their maintenance and construction gangs. Tour operators and fishermen on their way to the cape use the roadhouse as a rest stop and to top up with supplies and fishing gear. The locals of course frequent the premises for takeaways and confectionary.
Bain-Marie hot food is prepared for breakfast which can go on until 11.30am just in time for the Lunch Rush. Evening campers arrive after 3pm and are provided with dinners. Pizza four nights a week is very popular. The Laura Rodeo every June is a huge event with over 5000 visitors that provides the roadhouse with a booming weekend. The Laura Dance festival is even bigger with the roadhouse providing a drink stall at the festival ground.
All in all a thriving business for a couple who enjoy meeting people and wish to become involved in building up tourism.
