LAKE TINAROO AREA
Situated near the dam wall is the village of Tinaroo, which is a popular holiday and visitor destination for water activities including fishing (barramundi & redclaw), all water sports such as swimming, sailing, water skiing and bird watching.
There are several places for safe family camping around the lake.
Access to Tinaroo from Atherton is via Kairi (Pronounced Kee-Rie) a tiny farming township.
Lake Tinaroo is also a very popular area to live and several subdivisions have been built along its shore line including Tinaroo Waters, Tinaroo Park, Kulara Waters and Lakeside a suburb of Yungaburra.
Lake Tinaroo is located on the Barron River 19 kilometres to the northeast of Atherton. Lake Tinaroo is an irrigation lake and was constructed during the years 1953 to 1958. It was the first large dam to be built in Queensland for the conservation of water for irrigation purposes. It’s storage capacity is approx ¾ the volume of Sydney Harbour. The dam filled for the first time on 31st March 1963.
The lake has over 200 kilometres of shore line taking in many different types of topography, including the rainforest clad Tinaroo Ranges, pine forests, and eucalypt forests with huge granite boulders.
