* Views of the Coral Sea as far as you can see
* A salute to the life nautical
* A private retreat you won’t want to leave
* Seeing is believing

This retired master mariner is passionate about everything nautical. After renovating a 75 foot timber cruiser – the John Oxley – an ex pilot boat in Brisbane – a new challenge emerged. An elevated block showcasing what must be one of the most expansive views in Mission Beach caught this seaman’s eye and so began the start of a two year project – a salute to the life aquatic.

Built to his own design, the stem-to-stern structure is predominately locally sourced spotted gum and is spread out over two levels, nestled privately within the bounds of world heritage rainforest.

From a soaring entrance way, a timber staircase leads you to the living areas of this landbound ship where you can see as far north as the Barnard Islands, Dunk and Bedarra Islands and south to Hinchinbrook Island. Nearly every window and door can be opened providing a seamlessness between the land and the sea. Many of the timbers used in the furnishings within the home are from old maple trees felled on the property.

An indoor / outdoor casual dining / lounge area reminiscent of life in The Hamptons with it’s bold yellow and white striped furnishings floats above the rainforest canopy. The galley style kitchen with separate pantry and cool room has sash windows which open fully to that beautiful unobstructed view and a promenade deck runs the width of this level and takes you to a casual outside lounge area and then downstairs to the sleeping quarters. A more formal dining and lounge area is found at the southern end of the room and offers a secluded place when the seas are up and the wind is blowing a gale.

Downstairs a promenade deck links four bedrooms with indoor and outdoor bathrooms, capturing the views and overlooking a lap pool. Against largely restrained backgrounds of natural timbers and tongue and groove walls, nothing competes with the natural surroundings or the views of the Coral Sea. There are several entertaining areas to choose from on this lower deck depending on the weather and where your mood takes you.

The interiors of this home create an aura of comfort, relaxed luxury and enduring style – if you like the furnishings, they can be part of the sale – an eclectic mix of handmade timber pieces with old and new with vintage rattan, elegant occasional furniture and quirky nautical objects.

Praise must go to this ex seaman for his vision and passion and love for naturalist ambience.
