Capricornia Cottage was one of the first houses constructed on Olympus Crescent built as a holiday home by the Carey Family it was a much loved island escape. The present owners, in the restoration of the cottage have opened up and increased the living area by removing most of the internal walls but duplicating the mini corrugated iron lining. Colonial Restorations, an award winning company specialising in old Queenslander renovations has achieved a sympathetic restoration. Completed in May 2009, the character of the heritage style building has been retained, but with new bathrooms and a new kitchen in a low key design. The original casement windows and banks of louvers have been retained and when the rear of the building was completely rebuilt, the French doors and louvers were recycled.

Capricornia Cottage is the perfect Maggie island holiday home or permanent residence with 2 bedrooms and a bunk room able to sleep 6 people, 2 bathrooms, a covered porch for outdoor dining and deck areas is perfect for a couple down sizing. The rear double sized bedroom, bathroom and bunk room are accessed off the back deck affording privacy and a remoteness to the front bedroom

The restorations included a complete re-wiring of the cottage, new plumbing and copper piping.

Capricornia Cottage has split system reverse cycle air conditioning throughout the whole house, but the present owners have never felt the need to use it. During the summer, ceiling fans throughout, keep the house cool. Capricornia Cottage is situated amongst trees and palms which keeps the temperature mild. Winters are a brief affair on Magnetic Island, so only a light jacket is needed at night for outdoor dining. The paved area in front of the house and the back deck are perfect sun traps for the winter sun.

The eye for detail in the restoration included floor polishing with each individual floor board being sanded back to retain the cottage feel.

Jill, the Duchess of Hamilton owned Capricornia Cottage at one stage and the classic black and white floor tiles the Duchess installed in her many renovations on Olympus Crescent have been retained in the kitchen and main bathroom and duplicated in the new rear additions.

359 square metres of land provides plenty of outdoor living but minimal maintenance with paving, decking and lush tropical gardens.

Capricornia Cottage is on a group title sharing a double carport with another house situated at the rear. Dense vegetation affords complete privacy from the other dwelling. Household insurance covers any liability with a joint driveway and there are no body corporate fees as both dwellings are completely separate.

The present owners spared no expense in the renovation as this was to be their island beach house for ever.
