Shalom – 195.7 acres of absolute privacy; a wildlife haven situated in the beautiful Obi Obi valley of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland
From the moment you enter this property along the Bunya Pine lined driveway, you realise that you have found something special. As you travel past the summer creek, which meanders its way down the various hillsides and along the valley floor, you pass the Asian style pagoda. This remnant of the property’s days as a Buddhist retreat with its self sufficient lifestyle is where its current name ‘Shalom’ originates. Further into the valley, the old milking shed and black and white coloured creamery, tell the story of its days as a dairy farm, when it was once named Daylesford.
The self sufficient theme continues to this day, with excellent soil quality allowing the 27 types of mature fruit and nut trees to prosper. The six raised beds (5m x 1m) provide a permaculture style vegetable garden, which is close to the house.
The highset Queensland farmhouse has been lovingly restored, with key features from its past being saved to allow a mixture of modern amenities, whilst retaining its true country charm. There are two main living areas; the traditional snug room has a wood combustion heater which keeps the house cosy in the winter. The air conditioner and old Queensland style cross ventilated windows, allow for cooling in the warmer months.
The second living area is an open plan family room that incorporates a new large country style eat-in kitchen, and a small nook style office. There is one bathroom and three bedrooms. The main bedroom, with its own dressing room, overlooks a stunning Magnolia tree, a beautiful sight in the morning. The second bedroom is a double sized room with its polished hoop pine floors and ornate breezeway accentuating the traditional character of the house. The third bedroom is a large single room which overlooks the tropical house garden.
Around the home itself, there are established gardens of various designs. Large mature trees show off their limbs covered in orchids, staghorns and birds nest ferns. The cottage garden with masses of spring and summer colour to the north, overlooks the valley and creek, and the southern facing area houses a myriad of gingers, heliconias and ferns, which create the tropical gardens. Simple pathways allow easy access to these peaceful areas, with birdsong all around. A paved patio with a firepit at the front of the house, sits under the shade of the persimmon trees, and makes for a relaxing space at any time of the year.
There are several other buildings on the property, including a large immaculate 5 bay powered Colourbond shed, containing mezzanine floor and workshop area. The shed is 7.5m deep, 3m high and 16m long and has two large associated water tanks.
Another original building on the property has a quirky twist. Possessing underground power and ornate stained glass windows, it would be ideal for conversion to additional accommodation for family or paid guests. Several flat cleared sites throughout the property, lend themselves to possible camping or eco tourism sites.
A further shed provides additional storage for machinery such as tractors.
The current owners have had the property for 13 years, and have focused on establishing it as a wildlife haven. It is currently registered as a ‘Land for Wildlife’ property. Australian fauna is abundant and includes: koalas, wallabies, echidnas, possums, gliders, goannas, the rare Richmond Birdwing butterfly and numerous frog species. Over 50 species of birdlife have been noted including: resident Black Cockatoos, Wedge-tailed eagles, owls, frogmouths, honeyeaters and wrens.
The owners have been working with the local council to clear non-endemic species of flora from around the property, and in doing so, have found several rare types of trees and vines. Within the 195.7 acres of heavily treed ravines, slopes and rainforest gullies, exist majestic Flooded Gums, Tallowood, Ironbark, Native Pines, Morton Bay Figs and a large variety of rainforest species.
Horse owners could easily cordon off a lower paddock for their horses. Many established trails allow either walking or horse riding, both along the valley floor or along the fire trail that runs along the boundary to one side of the property.
The property is located 10 minutes drive from Mapleton or Kenilworth, 20 minutes from Nambour and 35 minutes from several of the coast’s best beaches.
Over the past century, Shalom has been held by only a handful of owners, and we are now looking for the next custodians, to look after this wonderful piece of history. Ideally, they will love wildlife and value all the natural beauty in which they live. In return, they will receive the peace and tranquility afforded by such a property.
