Earth Shelter House
Rare, innovative, unconventional and abundantly serene, this distinctive “earth shelter” house has been built on the crest of a South Australian hillside to blend seamlessly with the surroundings of one of the world’s finest wine estates (Please also see our listings for The Clarendon Vineyard and the opulent White House, from our Home Page)
Designed by German architect Gerhard Schurer on commission from David and Alan Hickinbotham as the low-impact centrepiece of their adjacent Clarendon Vineyard and Winery, the spacious and surprisingly light Earth Shelter House was once voted by Belle magazine as one of Australia’s best homes.
Located at the northern end of South Australia’s famed McLaren Vale wine region, the home is the essence of unpretentious and relaxed living.
Built from stone collected on the property and with a grassed roof, the natural structure of the house ensures inside temperatures hover at around 22C all year round.
The living and entertaining areas are located on one side of the home and include a library, spacious family and living areas, plus dining and kitchen overlooking a sunny terrace.
The bedroom accommodation includes a luxury master suite with walk-in robe and ensuite, another full bathroom with sauna and two further bedrooms, one with mezzanine.
Naturally, the cellar is a feature of the home, accommodating up to 2000 bottles and with room for dining and entertaining.
