Dalintober is a completely refurbished country house, probably one of South Australia’s finest, completed with integrity and great attention to detail. This fact is immediately apparent upon inspection – the property having been improved over a seven year period.
In 1866, the original single storey building was built by the Beasleys, (who were stonemasons and home builders from England) for Andrew Galbraith Johnston, of the Johnston brewing family, based in Oakbank.
In the early 1880′s, the house was enlarged, with the addition of the second storey, front section and ornate verandahs. The inside features well proportioned rooms with high ceilings and decorative cornice work, an elegant staircase, stained glass windows, Italian marble fireplaces and wrought iron lacework imported from Walter MacFarlane’s Saracen foundry in Glasgow.
The gardens and grounds are an absolute delight, having been carefully developed and nurtured by Mark Barnett, who is highly regarded and respected in his profession. Full plans are available and approved by Adelaide Hills Council. The gardens offer fruit and colour for every season, with a focus on organic self-sufficiency with and frost resistance. Parts of the garden were featured and aired on the ABC’s Gardening Australia programme, hosted by local guru Sophie Thomson (copy available). Approximately 4,000 metres of underground irrigation has been installed, linked to a fully automatic garden and lawn controller. Adding another dimension to the grounds is the use of extensive garden lighting, both low voltage and metal halide.
A wonderful private position adjoining and overlooking the Oakbank Golf Course. There is stabling, plus extensive shedding for the motor enthusiast. The gardens and grounds have, in a relatively short time, reached a maturity that affords both privacy and shelter, and will fulfill an even better ideal in the near future.
Dalintober combines its indelible architecture and historical significance with modern meticulous and professional planning, to further elevate its status as one of South Australia’s finest near city residences.
An uncompromised lifestyle, just an easy 30 minutes from the CBD of Adelaide and only 45 minutes to the new International Airport; indeed the convenience of location is unparalleled for such a property anywhere in Australia.
