We gratefully acknowledge the fact that the following information is taken from the book ‘Oakbank’ written by Carol Brockhoff 1990 published as part of Oakbank’s sesquicentenary celebration in particular pages 20, 44 and 45.

A brief history…
‘… George Pearson, a Cornish miner built the original two roomed stone cottage on section 237 in ‘Cotton town’ in about 1888…

In 1881 sections 5001, 503, 5004 and 5005 were subdivided into “working man’s blocks”, to be leased for a period of 21 years, with a right of purchase after that time. The man chiefly responsible for the introduction of the scheme was Mr Cotton M.L.C, and so the area subdivided was locally known as ‘Cotton town’. Some of those who leased the blocks were described in the directories and Council records as ‘blockers’.
A working man’s block was designed to help a workman support his family for wages at that time could provide only a poor standard of living for a family, with little chance of saving. On his farmlet the worker, or rather his wife, could keep a cow, some fowls and a pig or two, and grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. Thus the daughters or some of them would have plenty to occupy them, at a time when there was little opportunity for a girl to earn a living, and she perforce stayed home until and unless she married…’

Today
Incredibly section 237 has been in the same family since 1888 123 years.

The cottage was extended to four main rooms and later had fibro additions plus the front verandah ‘infill’. Further improvements include the 40 x 20 Besser brick building, (formerly a dairy), 40 x 20 x 14′ 3 sided hardwood slab and galvanised hip roof stable / tack area with lean to storage.

The land offers rich productive flats and gently rising country, there is also an old well a short distance to the East of the cottage.

A premium location on a quiet no thru road just 30 minutes from Adelaide.
