Vendors Story
My grandparents Ken and Eileen bought the property from the Housing Trust in 1954 after moving to Adelaide from High Wycombe in England. Grampa was a chairmaker and he built a workshop on the property to run his own business making high quality reproduction furniture for both private clients and for sale through Norman, Turner and Nottage, a prominent Adelaide furniture company through the 50s and 70s. He also created a typical English garden around the house: roses, bulbs and beautifully manicured lawns. There were very strict rules about playing in the garden!
In 1971 Grampa bought a new AV Jennings display home at Hardy Crt in Paradise and then brought his parents over to live at Shirley Ave. Gran died only a few years later but Grampy lived here for 10 years, tending the garden, recreating the allotment that he had had back home and making friends of all the neighbours.
My partner and I bought the house from my grandparents in 1984 just before the birth of our first child. As our family grew we planted out fruit trees so that there would always be something in season throughout the year, ran chooks, ducks and guinea fowl and kept the vegie patches going. A small “urban farm”
with no rules for garden play.
It is difficult to let go of a place that has been home to five generations of my family but I know that my new home will be a great place to entertain the sixth generation to come.
