Once in a lifetime opportunity to secure a piece of land of 1330sqm on one of South Australias best kept secrets. Situated some 165 kilometres due west from Adelaide, accessible by boat or plane, Wedge Island is natural beauty at its best.
Offering stunning coastal views, sandy beaches and unbelievably pure and clear waters, the island itself has so much to offer to anyone who just wants to get away from it all. With so much history behind the island itself there really isnt enough space to list but to name a few please read on.
The Island was discovered and chartered by Mathew Flinders in February 1802 and supported a small population since 1850. Mathew Flinders named the island Wedge because of its dramatic silhouette against the horizon. It remains astonishingly unspoilt and has succeeded in retaining its unique personality despite the encroachments of civilization.
1883 saw the island surveyed into 9 sections with full occupation of the Island commencing in the early 1890s, the homestead being built in 1893 and the woolshed following in 1894.
The island was utilized as farming for crops and sheep grazing and some of the implements used for this purpose still remain on the Island as testaments to a bygone era.
1911 saw the building of the lighthouse sited some 240 metres above sea level on the south western end of the island.
In 1942 Royal Australian Air Force personnel were based on the island during The Second World War which was established as a strategic outpost and lookout for enemy ships. Evidence remains of the gun turrets and ammunition bunkers near the lighthouse.
The history goes on and on and on
The most amazing part of the Island is its mystique. It has the power to soothe the stresses of life on the main land, to enable you to relax and discover yourself- however energetically you choose to pursue the many activities the island has to offer.
The Island hosts a remarkable variety of terrains, habitats and life forms. A Seal colony basks on the rocks at one end of the beach and Penguins nestle in the caves and crevices at the other. Rock Wallabies haunt the cliffs and rock formation, while Ospreys hover in the sky overhead. Emus range over the wide area of grassland and scrub and everywhere there are signs of the elusive Hairy Nosed Wombat and timid Bettong.
Wedge Islands flora will delight casual bush walkers and serious botanists alike.
