HISTORY – In 1934 the Circa 1885 Anglican Church was transported and relocated from Lenah Valley to Cressy Street, New Town. It was named after the location which was then Kangaroo Valley. The Kangaroo Mission Church was built just below the opposite Lady Franklin Museum near a rippling trout filled stream, a popular picnic spot. It was named St Bede’s when located at New Town.

Services were offered at St Bede’s from then until 2008. Thankfully, it is still here and well maintained, providing a beautiful living and working space, as well as, a charming, historic feature to the neighbourhood.

There are no heritage orders on the buildings, whilst this is strange, it is good to be able to improve the space without destroying the character that lends itself to a good lifestyle and inspiration on a number of levels.

PROBABLE USES – The property contains two separate buildings; a church and a hall. Therefore, two separate living spaces could remain. The church could be used as the studio and living in the hall. Both buildings could be work spaces or teaching spaces as the vendor made this a condition for the change of purpose certificate when the property was purchased and the vendor proposed to hold small art classes. However, the hall make a fine painting studio.

The church has a well appointed stage and could be used for teaching music and or drama, holding little concerts.

Otherwise, one could enquire about having two separate homes. The hall would need a small kitchenette. One could extend the hall, if permissible to add a room at the rear. Both bathrooms are very elegant. It could be shared accommodation, or just a workspace, perhaps heritage accommodation which is very popular in Tasmania with the wonderful Mona and other sites to visit.

The hall at the rear of the church is presently used as an artist’s studio. It has large, north facing window that conveniently flood the studio with light and warmth in the cooler months.

Both the hall and the church have a delightful and enchanting ambience and make lovely, flexible living and working spaces. Cressy Street is within walking distance to North Hobart which has a variety of restaurants, cafes and pubs, as well as the much loved State Cinema.
