Located in the historical town of Pontville, 5 Minutes north of Brighton and less than a 30 minute drive to the CBD of Hobart is the very cute landmark known as Turnkeys Cottage.

It reportedly sits on the Pontville Gaol/Watchhouse site which is of historic heritage significance, as it demonstrates an aspect of Tasmania’s penal history.

Turnkeys Cottage (a recent name) faced the entrance gate to the goal yard and is likely to have been the Watchhouse Keepers Cottage.

Originally constructed as a three room cottage, it was extended to double its size around the mid-nineteenth century.

The property still contains many original fixtures and fittings throughout, including original fire places, hand split Eucalypt and Baltic pine lined ceilings, doorways and window frames.

The cottage has a flexible floor plan currently set up as three bedrooms, a country style kitchen with an eat-in dining area, lounge room with wood heater, sitting room and separate dining room, along with a spacious bathroom.

The kitchen has had a recent makeover that fits in perfectly with the character of the property, boasting a Porcelain Double Butler Sink, Euromaid stainless steel oven with gas hot plates, Quantum Quartz bench tops and a slimline dishwasher perfectly hidden behind cupboard doors.

Outside there are easy care cottage gardens, a sandstone paved courtyard and rustic double shed – one side currently being used a garage and the other as storage.
