It was on the 6th June 1902 that the railway line was opened to the quiet, sleepy village of Eltham, with its pastured paddocks, orchards, and untamed landscape. The train line bought with it an increase in holiday makers from Melbourne, and an interest from budding artists searching for new subjects. Walter Withers was one such artist, who moved with his wife Fanny and children from Heidelberg to “Southernwood”, located on the corner of Brougham Street in Eltham.
An influential member of the Heidelberg School, Walter Withers was inspired by the tranquil pastoral scenery, and was known to load up his bicycle with paints and collapsible easel, and head off for a day’s painting. Many of Mr Wither’s most influential images, (such as “Spring” and “Silent Gums”) are eternal reminders of our local cultural heritage.
The historic residence of Southernwood is also a reminder of our past, now sited on around 1/3 acre. Retaining much of the charm and characteristics of the early 1900′s, the home features a separate sitting room with fireplace (one of seven), an open plan family room with garden atrium, large country style kitchen, a huge sun-filled rumpus room (built by Mr Withers as his studio), large bedrooms, extensive leadlighting, Baltic floor boards, and high timber-lined ceilings.
Southernwood is a once in a lifetime property with outstanding potential. The residence could be lovingly restored to former glory as a family home. Or perhaps it could be utilized as a gallery and cafe. Maybe the house could become the focal point of a sympathetic redevelopment? It all comes back to your creativity (and to council approval of course). It’s time to become part of history.
