The township of Yambuk was established in the 1850s, the Post Office opening March 1, 1859.
The town and surrounding area had a population of 540 and is located where the Princes Highway crosses the Shaw River, 18 km west of Port Fairy and 296 km west of Melbourne on the Princes Highway. The limestone cliffs to the east of town have been major attractions for tourists over the years.
